Critical and commercial success in Japan like its predecessors, the lukewarm reception to EarthBound and the GBA's successor the Nintendo DS already being available in North America for two years, Nintendo kept Mother 3's release to Japan. After years of being stuck in development hell, including canceled plans for a sequel on the Nintendo 64, Mother 3 was released for the Game Boy Advance in 2006.
